They take up a little more space which pushes the sentences a fraction longer. Collectively, throughout the whole paper they take up a lot more space. That is why it works more with longer papers.

I think it also replaces the spacing between all lines so that double spacing @ 12 font is now double spacing @ 14 font.

Ya I tried this with 64font periods and you can clearly see the spacing is increased between every line that has a period on it so teachers may catch on to this.

Example.
Line1 and 2=no periods, then normal 12font spacing between them. Line 3=period, line 4= no period, line 5=period on it. Then 14 font spacing between 2 and 3, 3 and 4 and 4 and 5.

Yeah, Big has it right. Word will make each line size equal to the font size of the largest sized character, whether or not it is taking up the entire row. Your paper is 12 pt, but the lines are all 14 pt. Cool trick. Never thought of it, but so simple.

you can alternatively just change the line spacing.

it's kind of funny that you spend so many years of school trying to eke out that extra half-page, and then at the end of your schooling most of your editing is to try to cut it down.
