Clicking a bad link?
I dont know much about this stuff at all so this may be a stupid question.
Is there any way someone can access your computer or put a keylogger on it or whatever these hackers do, just by you clinking a link? If you click some .exe file and run it, well thats obvious even to an idiot like me.....but what if someone uploads a video of them playing poker and you download the video and watch it? Can they do anything to my computer that way? More specifically, the video is loaded at megaupload.com...is this a reputable and normal site? |

Re: Clicking a bad link?
Depends, now there are files that have specifically crafted so that they will exploit poor coding in the programs that play the videos.
I usually don't worry about it though. |

Re: Clicking a bad link?
I can't speak for the site you are asking about.
But yes, just a single click can end up resulting in your PC being compromised. Keeping your OS and applications up to date will help a lot. |

Re: Clicking a bad link?
Yes, even on reputable sites. Looking at a website involves a lot of technology in the background like Flash, javascript, activex. Theres a lot of ways someone can try to exploit these programs.
The first thing you should do is stop using Internet Explorer and use something like opera or firefox |

Re: Clicking a bad link?
I would also add that you should only use accounts with administrator privileges when you really need to, e.g. for installing/uninstalling software, etc. Use a non-administrator account for you day-to-day computer usage, especially surfing the web or reading email. This limits the damage that malicious (or accidentally damaging) software can do. If you run some bad code under an administrator account, it has complete access to your files and hardware.
