Re: Car sales......anyone do this job before?
I was damn close to accepting a position at a Toyota dealership in Sacramento. However, my buddy convinced me otherwise after telling me about how big of a [censored] it turned his dad into.

My brother's friend is in car sales. You have to work extremely hard; he works 55-60 hours a week. You get out of it what you put into it. I also have a friend whose dad works in it and gets 100K a year. If you want to make a lot, you have to put in the time. It's really taxing stuff.

My friend told me that there is actually a lot of just sitting around waiting for customers to show up.
On the whole, he said, it is a pretty easy job. The bulk is waiting around, test driving and negotiating. |

Re: Car sales......anyone do this job before?
I spent a lot of the '90's selling cars. If you're good, it can be a nice living. Elite salesman, sales managers, general managers and the Finance and Insurance guys usually made at least $100,000. You will work a lot of hours, forget about a 40hr. work week. There is simultaneously camaraderie(us against them) and intense competition on the sales floor, making for an interesting dynamic in the workplace. If you like selling and you like cars, I'd say overall it's a pretty good gig.

To see a little bit for yourself, a great reality show is King of Cars ( I think it's on A&E) I. I like it, anyway- it's little slices of life from Tobin Dodge out in Las Vegas. Probably the most eccentric dealership I've seen, and I think the largest Dodge dealer in the country. They show newbies learning how to sell, they show the sales pressure, they show the people trying to get a car while somehow ignoring the fact that they're upside down on their trade and don't have a pot to piss in as far as assets....
Also, check out this good story on edmunds.com- a writer goes undercover to work at several dealerships and writes about what goes on. Confessions of a Car Salesman |

It would be for a Toyota dealership....the one where I bought my Corolla just a few years ago, so I definitely believe in the product.

Work 60 hours a week, but 50 of it is waiting around for a customer to show up. |
