Default OEM - anyone any idea how to get started?

I'm interested in getting a specific type of electronic product that already exists in a similar form designed & manufactured.

I'm presuming that I'd have to provide the specs for the product to a design engineer, then supply the plans he produces to the OEM manufacturer. Does anyone have any experience in this field? If the final retail price of the product was $150 what would be a minimum OEM run?

1. The other product is not being marketed in the country I'm in & they are not interested in giving me distribution rights.

2. There are certain simple improvements that could be made that would produce a vastly superior product.
