Depression - Eating More or Less
Why is it that when some people get depressed they eat a lot, and other people eat less?

Re: Depression - Eating More or Less
Personally I need to motivate myself to eat (be it cook or get out of the house to buy food) so if I'm depressed I eat less. Others take comfort in food so they eat to (try) make themselves feel better.

I'm similar to smiley in this regard. I get really bored of food quickly, whereas my brother is like an animal who can tear through the same pasta dish every day for months.

Re: Depression - Eating More or Less
Most of the time when you see someone that is obese there is something hidden deep within them, it isn't only that they love food but that there is a depression there. Most think that these people use food for comfort but actually overeating is a way of destroying themselves or killing themselves, only cosmetically. Depression can turn you into a masochist, some may disagree but it doesn't always have to be acute pain it can sometimes be pain that eventually comes from shoving the people you love away from you, then one day you realize everyone is gone...this is a form of pain as well. There are many different forms of pain. The situation is that many obese people suffer from issues that are deeper than what can be seen on the surface. My thought is that starving yourself is another form hurting yourself, it just looks different and seems different.

Re: Depression - Eating More or Less
I am frequently depressed and I find that I eat the same amount or less of regular food and a LOT more sugar (donuts, candy bars, cake, etc). I'm not particularly overweight but it can't be healthy for me.
Speaking of weight, since the World of Warcraft expansion was released 1.5 months ago and I stopped playing poker (which is my only source of income lol) I have lost 10 lbs, without any exercise. I'm down to about $5k so I suspect I'm going to be playing poker, being depressed, eating lots of donuts, and gaining weight again soon. |

Re: Depression - Eating More or Less
Whenever I am feeling serious about something or my mind is occupied, I will eat very little. After 9/11, I couldnt eat for days.
When I am pissed off, I tend to eat/drink more than usual. I think that these things cause chemical reactions in our body and when pissed off our brain tells us to do it. Obviously, some obese people take this to some kind of extreme. |
