Default Tutor Compensation

Since I am struggling in Intermediate Econ I've decided to enlist the help of an acquaintance. He is a freshman who placed out of Intermediate Econ entering the University. I'm trying to figure out what his compensation should be for his time. I'm ultimately going to ask him his rate, but what do you all think is a good deal? Booze? Cash? Other?

You'd be far better off spending your money on someone who has taken the course than someone who has placed out.

People who place out may be better at the subject, but they haven't taken _that class_. They don't know the pitfalls, and may not have covered exactly the same material. People too far advanced also tend to take shortcuts and elide over important steps because it is easy / intuitive for them.

Don't do this. Go to the econ department and get a tutor that has TA'ed for the course. They will probably know their stuff a lot better than someone who just passed out.

At my school, I passed out of intro micro from AP tests. My roommate took micro econ, and there was quite a bit that he was doing that wasn't covered in my AP class, so this might be a problem in your case.

I would also like to know how this freshman passed out of intermediate micro.

I met with him tonight, he explained some things. I was wrong about placing out of intermediate micro, he place out of intro micro and macro and already took intermediate micro.

are they freshmen in college? i would think $8-10 an hour would be fine, or booze would be a good reward, too.

mulebennet,

If I was a freshman, I'd laugh at the offer for $8-10/hr. The tutor is being hired to help with a non-freshman course.

From my experience doing math tutoring, Misfire's hourly rates are accurate. Last year a student paid me $50/hr for vector calculus help. This rate was his suggestion, not mine.

He tested out of an econ class, and you're wondering what kind of compensation would make him happy?

A woman.

Yes, I'm serious. Take him to a party, set him up with some drunk chick, and have her show him a good time. He'll be begging you to help you with your other subjects too.
