My congressman's attitude to UIGEA

Dear XXX,

Thank you for your interest in Internet gambling legislation. I appreciate hearing from you.

Any gambling not already regulated by the States is illegal. We must ensure that the same standard applies to gambling operations that establish themselves offshore in order to bypass U.S. law.

In addition, America's children are those whom we must protect the most. And Internet gambling threatens young people across America. Every computer with an Internet connection is a potential casino that provides access to children and invites them to gamble. All that is required to play is a credit card number and time.

H.R. 4777, the "Internet Gambling Prohibition Act," was combined with H.R. 4411 to modernize the prohibition against interstate gambling. On July 11, 2006, this legislation passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 317 to 93 and was included in the conference report for H.R. 4954, the "S.A.F.E. Port Act." This legislation was signed into law on October 13, 2006.

But anyway, Lamar Smith is a douche, it's no use writing to him. IIRC, he recently authored/sponsored a bill called the Safety Act or something, which basically requires ISPs to record every website people visit via IP address.

He's just another nosy do-gooder morally superior idiot who probably sends dirty emails to his male interns.

Without looking I can tell you that any TX Republican is very likely to have the American Banking Association and a bank or two in its top ten donors. So, what exactly, is lamar Smith going to do when banks begin to raise a stink about how burdensome the UIGEA regulations are?
