sat in on termination this morning
I was promoted to a manager with my company about seven weeks ago. Today, another department's manager asked me to sit in on a termination as sort of a witness.
I've had disciplinary talks with my employees already, but those were walks in the park compared to this, and I didn't really do anything in this meeting--just observed (acted as witness). My emotions are mixed. On one hand, it was an awesome sense of power (even though I wasn't really doing anything), but on the other hand, it was sad. It was sort of like being a part of an execution. I've been thinking about it all day (the hammer dropped about 9:30). It's surreal. I know this is kind of pedestrian by 2+2/OOT standards being as nobody went postal (or even cried), but it was a new thing for me. |

Good luck surviving the work week.
There is a reason the majority of terminations occur on Friday. |

Whatever.
This could be a good post if you fill us in on the details. What was the cause for termination? In what way did the meeting go haywire? |

Re: sat in on termination this morning
The meeting didn't go haywire. His supervisor cut right to the chase.
He was fired for failing to fill an order, and this wasn't the first time his negligence caused us to miss revenue. He had written warnings covering that topic as well as his attitude toward other employees. I really thought there'd be fireworks because in previous meetings he's cried and whined when people challenge him, but he just sat there and signed the paperwork. It was boring from that perspective, but the whole ordeal is still messing with my mind. |

Re: sat in on termination this morning
Pfft. I was once part of firing a Canadian who was on an H1B and had just gotten engaged and bought a house. There was no other work for him that would sponsor a VISA, so he was thrown straight into the [censored]. He also sucked as a programmer but thought he was fine so he really didn't understand the firing and was just totally crushed and in tears. He kept saying "what am I going to do?". It was seriously f**ked up.
ps. I think his solution to the problem was to rush the marriage so it wasn't that bad. |

[/ QUOTE ] It's always the guys who go quietly and calmly that you have to watch out for. [/ QUOTE ] In December 1999, I worked at an Oakland law firm near Lake Merritt. We had a very strange male secretary (temp) who was definately going to get fired. Before that happened, however, he was reported headed towards the office building (the Ordway building for those familiar with the area) waving a gun and threatening people on the lake path. He was shot in the leg by police. He was found with $3,000 cash, some drugs, and a "hit list". He was yelling that his bullets wouldn't fit his gun. Turns out he had a .22, but his ammo was .38! - Anyhow, from the hospital, this guy actually send a request for a recommendation so that he could get another job! - We actually had to have a meeting to discuss what we were allowed to tell prospective employers about this guy. I suggested we tell them to just look at the front page of the Oakland Tribune for December xx, 1999. |
