Default How can we revive the stud live game?

Somebody posted about how this board has slowed down so here is some food for thought.

Where have all the great stud games gone? I play stud, holdem and omaha but lately it is harder and harder to find non-holdem games at middle limits. I live in NJ and play mostly at the TAJ and the Borgata. When i play the above games i play in the 10/20 - 20/40 range.

Here is the problem i run into. When i go to play a session of cards i go with other card players and everyone likes the borgata since its bigger, nicer etc. The problem is that its damn near impossible to get a middle limit stud game going. I remember 1 time in the past year that i actually was able to play a long session of 10/20 stud at the borgata without the game breaking. 99% of the time however when i go to the borgata there are 1000 list of interests for stud games 30/60 and under however they never seem to open them up. Most of the time if youw ant stud at the borgata it must be 75/150 or higher, which is too high for me. I always ask the floor if there is any chance of them opening a game and most of the time i am met with laughter and an answer such as "nobody wants to play that game here".

The one exception to this rule is the 10/20 omaha/stud hi/lo game with a half kill, which is a good game. However the last few times i went i waited 2 hours or more for a seat and when i finally got a seat the game pretty much broke. Once we changed it to omaha h/l only and played it 3 handed for 2 hours and last time i played a guy heads up stud h/l for half an hour and then he quit. The taj has more stud with 10/20 and 20/40 usually running round the clock and a great 15/30/45 two way game. My major dissappointment is about a year ago, they got rid of the 15/30. This was a major dissappoingment for me as this game was my best game.

I'm kind of rambling now but what bothers me is that the TAJ seems to be the only room that has any stud going (with the exception of the higher limit games at the borgata) and no other room I know of in AC has stud.

its my favorite game to play and I see it falling to the wayside like 5 card draw and other games that you don't see anymore thanks to all the NL HE action.

Does anyone else worry that our live stud games are going to continue to dissappear and if so how we can keep these games going as it would be a major dissappointment for me if they fell off the few live game rooms that still have them.

The 15-30-45 Borg stud game runs pretty much every weekend.

stud dead in atlantic city? i find that hard to beleive. what limits are dead, or are all limits dead? it's funny, i was researching this yesterday planning a sick "vacation" to just play stud all day every day for 4 weeks. most of the websites say the casinos there carry a good amount of stud tables.

on a semi-related subject, i think stud won't be making much a comeback any time soon. it will still be spread but it won't ever be the number one game anymore. hold em is just so popular with televised events, that's what most of the players want to play nowadays. especially no limit. i think it will calm down after awhile and stud may gain some ground, but probably not for another 7 years.

also, it might shock you - there is still casino 5 card draw.

In a lot of ways the game of LHE is inherently better than the game of stud. It is faster and it requires less concentration (both because of upcards and because tracking the pot size is far less important).

Stud is certainly a more appealing game for sharp players who want to make money off of bad players, and I find it more intellectually stimulating that hold 'em. (Although this may be largely due to the fact that I have played a thousand times more LHE than stud.)

The bottom line is I can see no reason why there should be a resurgence of stud. Hopefully it remains a permanent fixture of mix games at least.

I do think mix games will become increasingly popular, but not nearly to the point of rivaling LHE or NLHE.

In LA the stud games are going the way of the dinosaur also.

20-40 at the Bike or 30-60 and above at the commerce... usually only one table and it's hidden in the back.

In vegas, Bellagio is only place to plsy stud with 1 or 2 $20/$40 games going each day. On a rare occasion, there might be $50/$100, but not too often anymore.

It is not clear if stud can be revived here as many of the players are 60 or older with only a handfull of younger players. Each year or so, 1 or more players may get very ill or pass away and this drains the game further. At this rate, it is possible that within 5-7 years there will be no stud at all here.

As to how to revive it, this bulletin board is one way by presenting a positive image of the game and providing good advice to newer players. I believe that some will see that stud is a much richer and interesting game than holdem and little by little the game might grow.

In addition, if you are knowledgeable of the game you can offer advice and such to other players that could gain by your experience. We need to teach others how to get better in the game in order to get more players who are comfortable to play it. It is ironoc that you need to make better players out of others, players who you are competing against and hoping to win against, in order to keep the game alive.

Hopefully, the WSOP will start to televise at least one of the stud tourns again so others will gain exposure to it. And hopefully it will include a commentator taht is very knowledgeable of the game. I don;t think the wsop televised stud at all in last year's tourn.

And maybe someone will write a wonderful book on stud that will get people motivated to play it more.

But things sure have changed in vegas with stud in the past 12 years. At the mirage, on a daily basis there were 1-2 $1-5 stud, 1-2 5/10 stud, 1-2 10/20 stud, 1-2 15/30 stud and 1 20/40 stud or $30/60 stud. In addition the was usually $75/150 or higher also going on. Stud is now gone from mirage. And the Bellagio only has the games as i said above.

I personally hate holdem. And hope for a rennaisance of stud. And i also hope for a Ferrari from Santa. i ay get neither wish.

But keep writing good stuff on this board and maybe some good can come of that.

Brett,

It's 20-40 now which is much better for the game.

Rubix,

Taj pretty much dominates the AC mid limit stud scene - they have numerous 10-20, 20-40 and 40-80 tables every day. Borg has a steady 20 game now. Btw, I am jealous you live in NJ - I have to travel four hours to play these games!

Same lineup I assume. Sweet. I haven't played in it in a long time, but I do remember the game well, and those memories are fond. My thing is I get to AC somewhat rarely these days and the HE games are just so good....

Yes, this has led to me playing a lot less stud lately.
