Default Equal Pay at Wimbledon

I don't get this equal pay crap. If women want equal pay, then they should play an equal amount of time. Oh, that's right. The women's #1 player in the world nearly passed out in her first round match at the Austrailian in a best of 3 match.

I'm guessing this is just what makes the most economic sense for the Wimbledon people.

If the pay is equal, more women will be interested, more people watching/going/interested = more $$$$$$$

Plus, it gets more media attention, which also gets them more $$$$$$.

Bottom line, yo.

Maybe so. It probably should be in direct correlation to how much money each side makes for the tournament. Are TV ratings higher for the women?

I think in the not too distant past, yes, the TV ratings were higher for the women. I'm not sure how it is right now.

I just saw this on the news too and frankly was surprised since I thought they already were getting equal prize money. In any event as far as I'm concerned Tennis is the one sport where I would think it fair if they got more than the men since, imo anyway, the women's matches are far more entertaining.

I find these "equality" arguments ridiculous, especially in sport which should be a virtual meritocracy.

Well, the meritocracy is who sells the tickets and TV time.
I don't care if the men's #349 can easily defeat the women's #1, it's how much people will pay to see #1 vs #2 in each gender. If the women's matches pull in the same amount of money, they should be paid the same.
