Default A hole in the earth.

Can someone explain to me what would happen if it was possible to drill a hole through the earth so that it reached the other side and then something was dropped in the hole?

In theory, if no other forces were acting on it, it would move back and forth between the two entrances to the hole forever. In practice, the object would be slowed by forces acting on it (air friction, striking the side of the hole, etc) and the oscillations would get progressively smaller until the object stopped in the center of the earth.
