Default FILM REVIEW: Happy Gilmore

You may or may not have seen this Peoples' Choice Award nominated classic. Spoilers, etc., there's a score at teh b0ttom.

starring: Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and Carl Weathers
written by: Tim Herlihy and Adam Sandler
directed by: Dennis Dugan
PG-13, 92 mins, 1996

A RAZZIE award winner (best headshake, Lee Trevino), Happy Gilmore tells the story of just another Anywhere, USA loser who thinks he's a hockey player, even though he can't skate. Beaing a deadbeat loser must run in the family, because immediately you find out that Happy's Grandma owes 6 figures in back taxes. The tax guy reposesses Grandma's house. It is when the movers come to take the [censored] out of Granny's house, when he takes a bet that he can't hit a golf ball a few yards, and immediately hits it 1,000,000 yards, breaking a window, hitting an old man, and knocking and old woman out of the 2nd story window. Classic!

Happy finds golf, and plays a local golf tournament, and winds up on the PGA Tour in a matter of minutes. To make a long story short. Happy starts out crappy, and ends up winning the tour championship. Along the way, he fights an alligator, gets hit by a VW Beetle, headbutts Bob Barker, gets called a Jackass several times, gets the girl, beats his arch rival, and gets back his Grandma's house.

I feel deeply connected to this movie. I think in all of us there is a Happy Gilmore waiting to come out. We are all telling ourselves that we are something we are not, and if we find that inner Happy Gilmore, we will be at peace with nature, and it will be a wonderful, funny journey along the way.

************
for current films, i'll add my own take on the rating scale:

0 -- Unless there's a rapping genie, avoid.
1 -- You should probably get drunk first.
2 -- Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, but you should find a way to do something better.
3 -- Either a nerd will tell you this is better than you thought or a film buff will tell you it's overrated.
4 -- Expect it to be in the Oscar discussion.
5 -- A [censored] classic on par with the all-time greats.

Teh Bestest Movie of all Time. 6.9

Awesome review. Concise, content oriented, comedically critical. Also, I eat pieces of [censored] like you for breakfast!

Oh, and Julie Bowen! Wow!. I saw her in a club in the Hamptons in 2004. Wow!
