Default Using Yahoo/Google groups to market

I just put up a site, and I got the idea to open up a couple of yahoo groups to help promote it, the site is about different types of diets, so Im making posts explaining to people what Im doing (reviewing diet plans), and giving them the link to my site, and to a yahoo group that I made for it.

From the yahoo group, I could have their email addresses so I could send them emails when I add a new review to the site, or if they wish, to learn about new products/diets.

Has anyone tried this? If so, how successful was it?

One suggestion I read here previously from JoshK that sounds like it would be applicable is similar to what you're doing. However, rather than simply promote the site in Yahoo/Google Group posts, try to rewrite articles from your site, maybe leaving some more info to be desired. Offer "references" or "more info" details in your post with a link to your site. It won't leave your post with the impression of just being spam, and it'll provide the readers with what they want: information.
