Welcome to the 1st Annual SCHMUP* MASTER 2007!!
* and/or other kinds of video games



WHAT SCHMUP MASTER is poised to become the premier real-money video game championship in the world. The inaugural championship will feature a short-but-sweet schedule of 4 weekly competitions for high scores, bragging rights, and cold hard cash. Future championships will feature longer seasons.


WHEN SM2007 will begin at 12:01 AM on March 5, 2007 and end at 11:59 PM on March 31, 2007. The four individual tournaments which comprise the championship will each run from 12:01 AM on Monday until 11:59 PM on Saturday.

Registration will begin on February 22nd. Registration will end at 11:59 PM EST on March 3rd. Late registrations will not be accepted under any circumstances.

To complete your registration, you will have to post the GameTap screenname you will be using during the championship in this thread.

More registration details (such as payment details) will be available once you have selected the games and buy-in amounts.


WHERE SM2007 will be contested through the GameTap client. GameTap’s weekly leaderboards make it easy for participants and the tournament director to follow the action and verify results. The transparency offered by the public leaderboards will help ensure a fair and dispute-free contest.

GameTap has very modest system requirements and offers a month-long trial membership for just $1. SM2007 has been designed to run for less than a month precisely so that participants can cancel their GameTap membership before their trial period runs out.


HOW MUCH You, the participants, will decide the stakes of SM2007! Choose up to 3 of the options through the poll in the main thread. Three divisions using the 3 most popular buy-in amounts will run concurrently. You will be able to enter AS MANY OF THE DIVISIONS AS YOU LIKE, provided that

A) You do not hold a state, national, or world record in any of the games chosen for the championship
B) You have never won more than $200 in any single public (amateur or professional) video game tournament
C) You are not under 13 years of age.

If you DO hold a record, HAVE won more than $200 in a public video game tournament, or ARE younger than 13, you may only enter the highest division.


PRIZE STRUCTURE The player who places highest on the weekly leaderboard in each division will win 10% of that division’s total prize pool. Thus, 40% of each division’s prize pool will be paid out to the 4 weekly winners.

The remaining 60% will be divided as follows:

30% of the total prize pool to the player with the most division championship points

18% of the total prize pool to the player in 2nd

12% of the total prize pool to the player in 3rd

Players will earn championship points according to the following formula:

50 pts for 1st in division
49 pts for 2nd

.
1 point for 50th place within the division

The top THREE scores a player earns each week will be added to his championship point total. Additional scores will be IGNORED and will not move opponents down in the standings. Thus, if one player has the top 5 scores on the weekly leaderboard, his worst 2 scores will be ignored, and the player in 6th place on the leaderboard will receive 47 points for 4th place.

Non-participants and competitors in other divisions will be sharing the same weekly leaderboards, but will be ignored for the purpose of calculating division championship points. Thus, if the top player in a division can’t manage higher than 30th on GameTap’s weekly leaderboard, he will still receive 50 points as long as he wins his division.

Points will be tallied by the tournament director and the tallies will be posted on Sunday so that participants can double-check the standings before the weekly leaderboards are wiped. All entries with a Sunday time stamp WILL BE IGNORED.

There will be no entry fees; 100% of the prize fund will be distributed to winners. Losers will still get nothing.

GAMES You, the participants, will also decide which games you will be playing during the four rounds of SM2007. GameTap offers weekly leaderboard tracking for an extensive list of classic schmup and other arcade games. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the offerings before choosing 4 of the options through the poll in the main thread. The 4 most popular games will become the Official Battlegrounds of SM2007. The most popular game will be contested last, the second-most-popular will be contested second-to-last, and so on. In the event of a tie(s), the tournament director will choose.
