svchost.exe is killing me
taking up like 95% of CPU, how do I fix this? also, I'm getting the same sort of deal with smc.exe thanks |

Also you could be looking at a trojan or something. Are you pretty tight with security? You could download the latest spyware definitions for whatever products you have then boot into safe mode and run thorough scans.

svchost.exe is a process that is executed whenever applications run DLLs. It is very common, you can see in Windows Task Manager / Processes even multiple instances running the same time. However, this should not take up more than 1-2% of the CPU. If it does take more than that, either an application is running abnormal, or you might have a TROJAN (malware allowing others to access your computer). Finding out whether this process is a virus or a Windows process depends on the PID of the task. Use a disinfect tool, anti-spyware program or smth like that. The other process is from your firewall (probably the TROJAN affected it too). |

If this isn't already fixed, I'd try a different firewall. Or at least kill smc.exe for a while and see if that's the culprit.
