Default a mistake or not?

To simplify this I will not go into detail about actual hands.

If my opponent makes a mistake on the trun by calling with nothing but a gut shot, but then hits his 6 high straight and I make a wheel. Does it become a huge error on my part for paying him off for it, thinking he wasn't dumb enough to call with that gut shot when he did???

Is the answer to every general question. I can answer your other question though. Worrying about paying off a 6 high straight when you make a wheel doesn't come up anywhere near enough times to make it a huge error. Things like cold calling preflop too often or completing the small blind too often are huge errors. Post the hand if you want situation-specific help.
