Default Trip Report: Weekly HORSE tournament at Sam’s Town – LV

Sam’s Town, an off strip local’s casino is now spreading a weekly 100 + 20 (ouch that’s a huge vig!) HORSE tournament on Sunday’s at 2pm with a very reasonable structure of T2,500 and 25 minute increments between games/blind increases. To my knowledge this is the only weekly HORSE tournament in Vegas. They usually have a full 2 tables, 3 on busy days. The tournament will be announced in Card Player next issue, they hope to average 3-4 tables soon.

I played in this weekend’s tournament, 90% of the opponents were pure dead money. Its an older crowd of former poker pros from the days when Razz and Stud were the most popular games. The best part of the tournament was listening to the two gents to my right, one was talking about how he is a Razz expert (he would cold-call a completion with a T showing and one low card in the hole… that must be an expert play I never learned) and the other bragged about how great he was at Stud 8 yet he never took down a pot (he would chase middle card gutshots with no low backup etc) – in short it was an amazingly soft game.

I hope the word gets out about this great game; I’d really love to see it grow. It’s become so popular that the floor has requested that they spread a HORSE cash game. It’s great to see the slow return of non-hold’em games!

PS: I came in first place, and I didn’t chop the prize (that’s a story into itself, my opponent was an ass who let me take advantage of his steaming tenancies and refusal to be bullied)

edit: I think the name of the casino is Sam's Town. Sam's club is a big warehouse where you buy stuff

I live in Vegas. Girls, booze, strippers are a daily part of my life dude. Bad poker is not a part of my daily life however.

I hurt his stack at S8 where we played just a few hands - mostly because he was too busy looking for spots to steal with nothing, then Hold'em for where I destroyed him by letting him hang himself in his own noose, then O8 for a few more hands before I took it down. The villain was a nasty old local, I enjoyed watching him go on crazy monkey tilt.

PS: Playing Razz and S8 at this table was like taking candy from a baby.

This sounds interesting. I am staying F-M at Main St. Station so only like a 10-15 minute drive to Sams Town(I assume thats what you meant..not Sams Club). I guess I have to crack open and finally read the Razz section of Super System.

What time do sign ups start? Mebe I can catch a movie after signing up if the sign ups are early enough. Vastly preferable to blowing a wad of cash at BJ and craps.

Also, is Sams poker room still smoking allowed?

Sounds like almost every Razz/Stud 8 table I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, no. It went non in late 2005. The smokers left there to go to Boulder Station, just down the street. Haven't been back since. When you want a good smoking room, Boulder is a good place to go, as Arizona Charlies is a little "off".

I signed up 1 hour before, was third on the list but last to take my seat (I was at lunch).

Thankfully the room is no smoking. In fact I was surprised that the smoking in the casino wasn't as bad as I expected it to be.
