2- In real life casino's, are you allowed to use a pad and pen to mark down notes during a live cash game or mtt that you are playing in? i understand that this would be frowned upon, but i'm wondering if it is allowed. thank you for reading. 3- my friend whom is all new to poker is trying to tell me that the 8 put's you over the limit in omaha hi, i understood that higher than 8 dq's you, so 8 4 3 2 1 if the lowest hand would be good , correct? |

Re: 3 questions
1. HE means Hold'Em not sure about HA. If your talking about online mixed game I think they might use H for hold'em and A for Omaha
2. yes you can. Get up from the table and make your notes rather than doing it in front of everyone. 3. It's low, not hi and it is 8 AND Lower. So the worst low you can have is 8 high. There is no restrictions / qualifications in Omaha hi |

Re: 3 questions
1. Confirmed
2. I have never heard of this not being allowed. 3. I'm really not sure what you are asking here but the best low hand in Omaha Hi/Lo 8orbetter is 5432A. The worst low hand would be 87654. |

1, can you please confirm for me that HA means (Hold 'em, and Omaha Hi" [/ QUOTE ] Yes. On FT mixed games, the dialog box says it means pot-limit hold 'em and PL Omaha high. Incidentally "O" in a mixed game, such as HORSE, means fixed-limit Omaha 8/b, which is presumably why they don't call that PL-HO. [ QUOTE ] 2- In real life casino's, are you allowed to use a pad and pen to mark down notes during a live cash game or mtt that you are playing in? i understand that this would be frowned upon, but i'm wondering if it is allowed. thank you for reading. [/ QUOTE ] I'm sure the Mandalay Bay in Vegas would throw you out for it, because they have odd rules prohibiting reading at the table. Everywhere else, you're absolutely fine. You might not want to be seen as a serious player at the table, though. [ QUOTE ] 3- my friend whom is all new to poker is trying to tell me that the 8 put's you over the limit in omaha hi, i understood that higher than 8 dq's you, so 8 4 3 2 1 if the lowest hand would be good , correct? [/ QUOTE ] As stated by others, in Omaha 8/b an 8-low such as 8432A is a qualifying low hand. As long as the 8 came off the board and not from your hand, e.g. 842 on board and A3 in your hand, it's the nut low. But you said Omaha high, which would be a typo right? Omaha high doesn't have any low half of the pot. |

Re: 3 questions
thank you for the responses. yes, omaha high was a typo, i meant low. i'm way confused by one thing here, AKQJ10
wrote " As long as the 8 came off the board and not from your hand" now this is a shocker to me, so if the board is 342 and i have ace 8 in my hole cards, i woulden't qualify for the low hand? what's the idea behind this? what if the board was 342, and i have ace 7 in the hole, could i qualify for the low hand? is it only the 8 that can be in the hole and not count and 7 or lower is allowable in the hole? am i understanding this right? thank you in advance for any insight you can offer. am i understanding this right? thank you in advance for any insight you can [/ QUOTE ] AKQJ10 was referring to you not having the NUT low if you hold the 8. You definitely have a qualifying low hand if you hold A8 on a 432 board, but the nut cards are A5. The A7 would be a qualifying low, but again not the nuts. |

Re: 3 questions
Exactly, what Sheridan said.
But if you're an aspiring O8 player -- assuming you're playing full ring, not shorthanded games -- you need to be thinking constantly about whether your low hand is the nut low, second nuts, third nuts, or worse. Very rarely will anything lower than the 2nd or 3rd nut low have any value, and even then you need to play carefully and not get trapped. Everyone knows to play A2 or A3 in O8, so if you have 32 on a 764 board you're just costing yourself money to call bets and get shown a better low. |

i understand now, thank you, 1 last question, does all of the above also pertain to stud lo? [/ QUOTE ] Stud played only for low, aka Razz, is played without a qualifier. So, the stuff about the 8-qualifier doesn't apply. You're still trying to make the best low, of course, with 5432A being the nut low. Stud hi-lo is usually played with an 8-qualifier for low. However, things are different since you're not playing with community cards. Stud/8 is a pretty complex game, imo, and there's is a big edge for good players. |
