Default Rarest phd in the world?

Does anyone know the rarest phd in the world?

My friend said it was accounting and that got me curious. I couldn't find anything on google.

I believe there are several PhDs in subjects that have been awarded to only one person. I doubt accounting is one of them, but it's pretty rsre.

I have 2 PhD accounting students in one of my econ classes, which makes me think that it probably isn't the rarest.

I once heard that Carnegie Mellon U. is the only place in the world you can get a PhD in Robotics.

At some schools you can design your own specialized PhD program, so what ever you created would probably be pretty rare.

Pages 4-7 of this pdf answer your question. Doctorates awarded by field of study from 1996-2005: http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/nsf07305/pdf/nsf07305.pdf

Lots of disciplines had just a handful of doctorates awarded each year.
