Default Go on a diet?

I have just begun working out last Thursday.
I am going to be working out(hard, 60 minutes) every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I will be coaching Monday, Wednesday, Friday and also most likely some light lifting. A little background:

I was lean, in my prime, and actually probably could have lost a few more pounds in August of last year at 185. I gained 16 pounds in the two off weeks before football season. I gained 13 pounds during the season while only working out once a week, but practicing every day. I have gained 11 pounds since, doing no working out or physical activity whatsoever. I am at 225

My questions are: Should I go on a diet now? Should I work out for a few weeks keeping my normal eating habits and see where things go? If I do go on a diet, how many calories should I intake given my workout situations. Or would dieting be detrimental to my lifting?
Thanks for any feedback.

Eating a specific number of calories a day. Would this be beneficial to me given my current situation?

I always think longterm. Fad/short term dieting is never really the answer. Try to just eat junk food less/not at all, drink water instead of soda/juice, eat plenty of fruits and veggies. That + regular exercise is the easy key to weight loss and long term health.

It's simply a matter of burning more than you consume if you want to lose weight. If you really want to get down to the nitty gritty, use a tool to find your approximate daily energy expenditure and count all of your calories. 1 lb of fat = 3,500 calories. Do the math.

Agreed. I doubt that OP will get 8 tackles for a loss this season.

The best diet for your situation is carb cycling. Consult a nutritionist before taking up a diet anyone recommends on the internet... but here's what it is:

It's a 3 day cycle, of low, medium and high card intake.

I've seen some sources say to go 25g, 100g and 250g respectively.

I've seen others say 100, 200, 330 respectively.

Make it so that your high activity days are the same as your high card days.

Essentially, this diet tricks your body into burning fat for energy instead of canabalizing your muscle mass.

It's working fairly well for me... I haven't been on it long and have lost 3lbs, but at the same time I've gotten noticably bigger.

I'm trying to lose 25lbs this way, but it's more like losing 50 since I will be gaining mass at the same time. I'm 6'2" 220 fwiw.

One of the biggest difficulties I've faced when dieting is overcoming cravings. Recently I've used an appetite surpressant called Glucomannan. It's basically just fiber pills that make you feel full about 30 minutes after taking them. Makes dieting so much easier..and it's inexpensive too.
