McAfee Virus Scan shuts itself off temporarily?

Anyone had any experience with anything like this? It's only started happening recently. My system seems to slow to a crawl, then I get a Windows popup that says "Hey dude, no virus protection." I check the status of McAfee, and it says that my VirusScan is inactive. After a few minutes, it turns itself on, only to repeat this process later. I've googled and haven't come up with much.

I was wondering if anyone here has had any similar problem, and what they did to fix it?
