Default 7Stud: Chasing down pair with draw HU?

My gut tells me there are for and against for chasing down a pair with a draw heads up: first, it may not be a pair and secondly, the draw could hit a pair or two pair to win. Though, initially on the odds for a draw it is wrong but factoring in the pairing/two pairing scenarios is this positive expected value to chase down a complete with draw heads up or not?

The draw is usually about even money against 1 high pair.

If you have overcards to the suspected pair, you are favored.

I would (almost) always play in this situation.

This question only makes sense if you are talking about a gutshot. I think that is one of the tricky gray areas in stud (whether to continue on 5th with a gutshot and a bunch of overcards to their door).

I think if the pot is largish and the 3rd street play was such that they didn't necessarily have much to start with, you can call on 5th hoping to either pair or make your gutshot.

Not quite. If you have two overcards to his pair (assuming all cards are live) you are just under even money with a three flush. If all three of your cards are under his pair then you are a 2:1 dog. Obviously the more of your cards (pair and suits) that are dead the worse those odds get.

Usually the draw will be around even money. With the antes and bring-ins, it's usually worth playing.
