Is this even feasible? Last 1:30 of a game? 1 challenge per team. If this is wrong you lose a timeout? It'll save us from Bennett Salvatore.
What do you guys think? |

What kind of things can you challenge? When the ball goes through the hoop, it's pretty obvious, which is unlike the NFL.

Current NBA Instant Replay Rulez:
[ QUOTE ] Instituted 2002-03 • Use of instant replay to review certain last-second plays at the end of each quarter and overtime periods. Replays will be conducted and processed in two minutes or less by the game officials. Replays are triggered automatically – and not at the discretion of the officials or teams. • Instant replay will also be used when: (1) A foul for which the resulting free throws could affect the outcome of the game is called with no time remaining on the clock (0:00) at the end of the fourth quarter or any overtime period or (2) A foul is called with no time remaining on the clock (0:00) at the end of the first, second and third quarters. In these situations, officials will review instant replay to determine only whether the called foul occurred prior to the expiration of time on the game clock and not whether the call itself was correct. [/ QUOTE ] I don't have a strong opinion on whether a team being able to trigger an instant replay is good or bad (for say the most disputed calls, fouls). But I think the current NBA instant replay rules in effect are good. -Al |

They way the NBA currently uses instant replay is perfect. Any change would be moronic and ruin the game. The only real natural breaks in play are timeouts. Which is completely different from the constant pauses in the NFL, YIPPE!

TSC - hypothetical (again I don't really feel strongly about this 1 way or the other):
Zach's got the ball, 1 down, 10s left, you're on the road against the Clips. Brand very clearly hacks Zach under the basket on shot attempt, no call. Blatant home-cooking. Under new rules Nate can call for an instant replay last 30s of play in a 1-possession game. [ QUOTE ] Any change would be moronic and ruin the game. [/ QUOTE ] Maybe I am missing something really obvious... -Al |

It's really hard to get a call in the NBA wrong. Which is why IR isn't used much.
In the NFL, there's so much going on in such a large space that you need to have more eyes on the field. And even then, the game moves so quickly that it's hard to catch things. Play in the NBA is more confined since it mostly occurs on one side of a court rather than a full court while an NFL play can be stretched longer than a length of an NBA court. That's why there are more referees, judges and umpires in football than in basketball. If there's that much of a problem with inaccurate calls, add more eyes to the court if need be and encourage communication in questionable, game-breaking situations. |

Your hypothetical is pretty silly. You say its clearly a foul and yet its not called. While there is indeed some minor exceptions, thats getting called just about every time. Anyways, I am more inclined to be supportive of a replay when something is actually called as opposed to when something is missed. Its different in football though, because every single play has at least some sort of referee decision. Such as the spot.
People have been arguing for replay in soccer. I would only support this if it was used in one case only. When a penalty is called in the box. If the ref misses it, [censored] that sucks, but you move on. We can go back and forth with hypothetical's but ultimately replay works best when reviewing a call on the field/court/pitch. |
