Default Meds from Mexico

I'm going to be going to Mexico on vacation in about a month and know that certain medications are much cheaper there. Currently I spend approx. $500/mnth or so on medication. Most of the stuff isn't scheduled or controlled or whatever so I don't think I'd have a problem and I'm not going to bother trying to get the actual narcotic there.

Anyone have any experience buying stuff over there? Can I just walk into a pharmacy and tell them what I want without having a prescription as long as it's not a narcotic? Anyone done this before? Horror stories?

Thanks

What are you picking up? You shouldn't have much problem getting anything not terribly unusual.

A prescription will make it less of a pain to bring back though.

Oh I'm sure they will have all of the stuff, it's all common. I am more interested in the ability to get it by just walking in and asking for it without having to see a Mexican Dr.

I searched a bit online but haven't really found any recent info.

Unless things have changed drastically in the last couple years you should have no problems at all.

I always load up on my prescription meds when I am in Mexico. The pharmacist has never asked to see my prescription (I never have it on me, anyway). As long as you know the formula, you can get the exact medicine you take here (albeit under a different brand name).

some medications require prescriptions, most dont. you should go to the pharmacy and order what youre looking for. if the pharamacist needs a precription for any of them, he'll tell you. if a prescription is required youll have to go to a "doctor" which you can find on any street. (usually people are running around the streets asking if you want to see a doctor anyway and trying to direct you to one).

there are limits on the amounts of each med you can bring back.

in college, years ago, i crossed, i went up to US border guard and asked him what the limits were for some meds and double checked that we could bring them back before we had them in hand. he was friendly and told us what the deal was.

two hours later we come back through w/ the meds and claim them once we're back in the US. this same boarder patrol guy comes up to us several other guards. theyve got mirrored sunglasses on and wont talk to us and us tell us to follow them. they split us up and put my friend in a holding cell. meanwhile, im being guarded by two guys. i try and make small talk w/ them but they just ignore me. several minutes later my friend comes out of the holding cell he's buttoning his pants back up. i want to crap myself right there. i get ushered into the cell and have three guards pat me down. i get to keep my clothes on. the whole time im thinking, "did this boarder guard set me up?" and mostly "WTF!!!"

once im out of the cell, the lead guard is all smiles and shakes our hand and starts talking to us friendly again. he says they have a daily search quota and since we already told them we were bringing some meds across, and fit the profile, they decided to see if we were smuggling anything illegal (roofies were big back then because they had just become illegal to bring back over).

since that day, ive brought some meds over a few other times. none as memorable as the first.
