Default Anybody else think the PPL is not going to happen?

Somebody asked for an update over at Fullcontact and all Daniel said is "I haven't heard anything" and that was last Saturday.

It's like the PPL is in the witness protection program.

It seems pretty strange that this thing was hyped big time last Sept/Oct and now it seems like it has dropped off the face of the earth. The best theory I have heard is The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act could be the killer?

Anybody heard anything?

I strongly suspect it will not happen.
It was a terrible idea to begin with, and the fact that their TV deal was on a network that most people had never heard of didn't help either.
It seems like the pros were promised a lot, and thought it was a fun concept to discuss amongst themselves. But I haven't heard from any poker fans who were excited about the idea.

I know the details of what the pros were promised. With the lack of funding from internet endorsements, no shot this thing goes in the near future. OBV UIGA is to blame.

One has to assume at this point that any TV project targeting the U.S. market that will require funding from an online poker "school" is on hold at this point in time.

(I would include the remaining 2007 WSOP Circuit events and the 2007 Wynn Classic in this category in addition to the PPL. One can also put Poker SuperStars IV in this category.)

What will be interesting to see in 6 to 8 weeks: whether The Travel Channel will exercise its option for Season 6 of the WPT.

Recall that WPTE lobbied hard for the UIGEA, thinking that the passage of the UIGEA will choke off all the "time buy TV" projects funded by the likes of Full Tilt and MANSION.

(I do know that MANSION is pretty much finished with the U.S. market at this point. Season 1 of PokerDome only has 8 weeks left.)

Whether WPTE will end up choking itself off from the U.S. TV market remains to be seen.

Are the WSOP Circuit events TV projects? I thought they reduced the buy-in because there was never any plan to put these on TV anymore. Are you saying they might be cancelled?

I would agree with all of your points except for the WSOPC events. Harrah's will do all they can to keep WSOP participation as high as possible. With online poker in the US in jeopardy it would make no sense whatsoever for them to abandon the circuit program. Not only do the circuit events keep up interest for the WSOP at the Rio but they also add significant revenue to the host casinos who take in these players and all the ancillary income poker players bring to their casinos.

As to the PPL -- buh bye. Awful concept with zero staying power.

The WSOPC events will be held as scheduled.

However, I do NOT believe that any attempt by Harrah's to put the 5 remaining WSOPC $5150 buy-in events on TV will happen unless Harrah's were willing to lose money on the telecasts.

I agree, it wasn't even good tv. The announcers were TERRIBLE and very few people got paid.

You are thinking of the PPT, which I actually thought was a much more promising concept, and was sad to see it fail.

You have never seen the PPL. You have seen the PPT.

They are quite different.
