Do I Care What Other People Think?
Richard Feynman and Ricky Nelson say no. As do lots of others. Perhaps surprisingly, I don't completely agree.
I actually would prefer that someone has a good opinion of me. I just don't want that to such a degree that I would say or do something that I think is incorrect. Especially if I know that I have thought about the issue more than they have or if I believe that I am signicantly more capable about thinking about things in general than they are. Since that is usually the case when someone has a problem with what I say or do, I ignore them and thus give the appearance of not caring about their opinion. That's not true but I don't have time to debate everybody. Thre are two times when I don't ignore criticism. One time is when the criticizer is obviously smart and obviously has thought about things. Mickey Brausch, El Diablo and Phil 153 come to mind. I'm still usually right of course, but they do make me double check my position. The other time is when I think the criticism stems from an innaccurate understanding of the facts. If someone thinks badly of me based on an innacuracy, I will go to some lengths to correct it. Daniel Negreanu's recent post on the SMP criticized me for having an opinion about Christians that I don't have. He misread my original post. That bothered me. Several people who read about my relationship with the girl who I later found out was only 16 called me a predator and worse. That is their right. But not if they are making assumptions without having all the facts. So that bothered me too. Which is why I let the now 21 year old "Saura" have her own little thread on the NVG forum where she is answering all serious and some not so serious questions about those times five years ago. |

All,
While Daver's fake IM log reflects my true wishes of course, I obviously would not send him the third line without first verifying it was true. |

Daver,
I would make a witty retort to that, except I don't know which one is The Statistician. |
