Default Power surge trip report

So I'm sitting in my office, minding my own business and watching an episode of Jericho on my computer (sweet show btw but NO SPOILERS please i've only seen the first 7). It's a little too bright in the room so I reach over to turn off a lamp and BAM click goes the bulb and my computer dies at the same moment. Good thing I neglected to protect my PC with a surge protector.

But ok, I figure I'll just go and reset the circuit breaker. That's never failed before, but as I always say "there's a first time for everything" and when I try to reset the circuit breaker (yes I know it has to go all the way to Off first) it just trips right back. I repeat this sequence maybe a dozen times then realize that i've had enough unpleasant shocks for one night!!

I noticed also that although the circuit breaker for my bedroom hasn't tripped, one of the outlets there isn't working...the one in the wall my bedroom shares with my office.

So...am I screwed or am I screwed? Any theories on what might have happened?

Try unplugging everything before trying to reset it again?

I did, but it didn't help

I also tried airing out the room cos I thought overheating might be the problem. There's a big old-skool water heater in this smallish room and I've been running it non-stop cos it's freezing in Boston right now.

But that doesn't seem to have helped either.

LOL. Either you're running too much power on your circuit or something's F'ed in your wires. Get an electrician.

Unplug everything in the room in question, and reset the main breaker (which will turn off everything in your place), then reset the problem breaker. if this doesn't work call an electrician.

and yes it's friggin cold here, i hate it
