The Importance of Chip Tricks
I was watching a WSOP edition of 'the nuts' where they had Bret Youngblood talking about chip tricks saying something like "It is improtant to know chip tricks so that your opponents will fear you and think, 'wow, he must really be good, I better stay away from him.'"
I cracked up laughing at the absurdity of his comment thinking only the weakest of the weak players would actually be intimidated by chip tricks. From my experience, I believe that alot of players (mostly low limit) try to make up with style what they lack in substance, hence they emulate the pros with their fancy chip shuffling acts. Also, when a scare card comes on the river and a player goes out of his way to do a chip trick before he bets, he is most likely bluffing. What are your thoughts and experiences with players doing chip tricks? |

Re: The Importance of Chip Tricks
Chip tricks give the impression that you spend a lot of time around chips. This could mean that you play a lot of live poker. That could mean you are good.

Re: The Importance of Chip Tricks
From my experience, the people who do a lot of chip tricks learned everything they know by watching TV, And take themselves far too seriously.
I've met a couple people like this at home games, They really sucked. Havent run into anyone like this at a casion though. I mostly play low limit hold'em, and If you held up the game to do a chip trick the table would scream at you. |

Re: The Importance of Chip Tricks
The best trick of all: take all your opponents' chips, starting with the guy who spins them in his fingers and rolls them off the felt like a clown.

Re: The Importance of Chip Tricks
They really have no use except
1. Amusing yourself during the long stretches of boredom and non-playing that come with live play. 2. Identifying the tools at the table trying to impress everyone with their tricks. |

Re: The Importance of Chip Tricks
I don't do chip tricks at all at the table. Some people feel that they can help you stay calm in big hands by getting your mind off the cards, but I feel that there are much better ways to do this. As for people that do them, there's this one player at our home game who can do ridiculous chip tricks (Chip shuffling huge stacks, etc). He also happens to be by far the worst player of our regulars.
