Default Beat: Mandatory Attendance

Just got out of my earliest class (9:30-10:50) and in the syllabus it says that after two absences each absence drops you a letter grade. To me this is the worse since you know all of us have those mornings where we wake up hungover or were just out late and the last thing you feel like doing is going to some class. I'm seriously considering dropping it and taking a different class, seeing as it's just an elective anyways.

Anyone else with mandatory (or just a lot of your grade depends on it) attendence this semester, or had mandatory attendence bite them in the ass later on? If so, please share here.

Dude if it is an elective just drop it. Take some big lecture class where the teacher doesn't even know your name and you don't have to worry about this [censored].

I failed a class once because of the mandatory attendance policy. Really irritating, but it was my own fault. I took a class with the same professor the next semester and aced it.. and I didn't skip class that time either.

I would never take a class with a mandatory attendance policy that wasn't important though, if it was just filler I would change to a different professor or a different class if possible.

Is it a small class where the professor will take attendance himself? ...or will a sheet to be signed be passed around? I've had a few classes where a sheet is passed around and you have to sign or initial it. There are obvious ways to get around it.

So far 2/3 of my classes are have mandatory attendance policies... sucks ass.

If I had a class before 10AM w/ said policy, I would not pass.

Same here

I think that attendance should be rewarding enough in itself. The more classes you go to, the more you should understand the material, and thus get a higher grade. I don't think you need to penalize the people that don't go to class even more. BTW I hate going to class.

I think this is my most likely course of action. The only reason I might not is because the class while not that important may actually be interesting (doubtful that it's so interesting that it's worth going to all but two classes though) if I could get it changed to a different teacher (without attendence policy) at a most likely different time I think that's optimal.

There's more to college experience then going to your classes. I'll let other's elaborate.

QFT, and I'd imagine that's why most classes don't have mandatory attendence policys.

I went to two classes today, Speech and Microeconomics.

SPEECH:
--We are only required to attend class on the days that speeches are to be given. Also, in addition to only having to attend those days, my teacher lets us miss *TWO* of the speech days. Just looking at my syllabus, it looks I only have to present 13 out of 29 possible classes.

Odds are, I'm going to be attending most, if not all of the classes because my teacher is HOTT! She's only like 27, but unfortunately she's already married, too.

MICROECONOMICS:

--My teacher seems like the most laid-back guy on the face of the planet. He told us that we don't have to show up to class except on test days, but that if we did, expect to do terrible on the tests.

OVERALL:

It looks like I'm going to be going to most of my Tuesday/Thursday classes, despite my teacher's lack of an attendance policy.
