Default Golf bet (Ivey vs. Corey Pavin) as discussed in Poker After Dark

Could someone please explain the bet between Ivey and Corey Pavin that was discussed in episode 2 of Poker After Dark?

Lots of golf jargon that I didn't quite pick up on. Ivey plays from the reds (ladies' tees?) and Pavin from the sticks? (not sure I heard that correctly).

$10k per hole.

Ivey scrambles? With whom? Pavin plays straight up I assume.

This is my guess, as I didn't see the episode. Red tees are the forward tees, the shortest ones available on the course. The "tips" are the back tees, for the pros and overly macho players. Ivey probably scrambles with himself, playing each shot 2 or 3 times, and being allowed to play the best of each 2 or 3 attempts of each shot. It sounds like Corey plays a regular format.

I just watched the episode again and I believe you are correct.

Both Sheiky and Hellmuth said they'd bet Pavin. Huck said they were out of their minds.

One other question: Ivey was to play at TPC Summerlin. I thought it was said that Corey would play elsewhere but didn't catch the course.

Anybody recall where?

Just rewatched it on web and they are both playing the same course. Phil scrambling from the reds (2 balls) and Pavin playing from the tips (not scrambling). Phil and Huck played a scramble together at Summerlin and shot 84 and lost a lot of money to "Yosh" that day. Huck: "Scrambling the ball from the reds seems so easy, i mean" Phil:" You have to think that he hits two bad drives in a row sometime" Huck: "I guess he hits it pretty bad doesn't he"

"Yosh" = Yosh Nakano, a professional tournament and cash game player living in LA. Home turf=Bicycle Casino

I obviously haven't seen Phil play (well, except for that Nuts segment from the 2004 WSOP), but if he's not getting any strokes, I can't see how Pavin could lose.

Kerze,

Was it $10k per hole or overall?

84 in a scramble is nothing to brag about, and I think Huck is pretty decent, so Phil is probably pretty bad. I think they said he's a 15? That sounds generous. As Helmuth or someone said, you have to figure he's still going to bogey (at least) a lot of holes, even scrambling. I'd take Pavin.

Greg - just wanted to say that you're a class act, if you happen to read this, a real class.
