A chance to play mid-limit poker at small stakes...
I made a bad decision towards the end of a live 8/16 session the other night and feel like I got a bit of an education after staying in the game too long, after it got infested with some tricky, aggressive higher limit players.
We're playing 6-7 handed. UTG+1 is directly to my right and plays higher than this level often. He's a bit on tilt and has been open-raising a lot, and I've been 3-betting him with decent cards a fair bit (AQo and AA are the two most recent). BB is pretty new to the game, but has some rapport with the SB, who plays in the bigger games often. Both players are aggressive and capable of making plays at the pot. Pre-flop: UTG+1 open-raises, I 3-bet in MP with QQ, folded to the BB who calls. Flop: 3 players for 9 SB [2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]] Checked to me, I bet, BB calls, UTG+1 check-raises, I call, BB calls. BB called quickly both times, I called intending to raise most any turn card. Turn: 3 players for 7.5 BB [6[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]] BB checks, UTG+1 bets, I raise... Good so far? What's the plan from here? Comments on the turn raise vs. a flop 3-bang? -d |

Looks fine so far. I'd probably call down a 3bet from UTG1 and fold if it's from BB.

Re: A chance to play mid-limit poker at small stakes...
Since no one else has responded, yet, I'll take a shot.
The pot is reasonable sized so I would 3-bet the flop. I know that the flush and OESD will stick around, but folding overcards or gut shots would be a help. Also, if UTG+1 caps you, you are likely dealing with AA, KK, or a set of T's. Given you have position, have shown strength, and there would hopefully only be two of you, it is unlikely that you get 4-bet with a draw. If 4-bet I call down. If just called, I would bet/Fold the turn. |

Looks good, I like the call. He almost cna't c/r and then check, so you're pretty sure you can raise the turn. If 3 bet, I'd just call down from there on.

Re: A chance to play mid-limit poker at small stakes...
Do I really have any chance of winning the pot when I get 3-bet and BB calls all the way, considering I probably have between 5-13 cards to dodge from BB? What am I beating from UTG+1 if I get 3-bet?

Re: A chance to play mid-limit poker at small stakes...
I really like your gameplan so far. If the BB is decent and just calling the whole way, he either has a monster or is drawing, and your play on the turn will decide which it is. You're exploiting your equity to the max if you can get him to call two cold on the turn, and with that card, you have outs unless he has 34. Raising the turn will also put UTG+1 to the test, but I think he has JJ, TT or QQ since he raised PF but didn't cap it. He might have AK of diamonds and just be pushing a big draw, but I think he'd cap with that PF, so he either has a smaller overpair or top set.
Either way, I like a turn raise versus a flop 3-bet. |

Re: A chance to play mid-limit poker at small stakes...
I would've 3 bet the flop, but waiting seems fine. BB doesn't look like he has much as he'd probably check/raise the flop if he flopped a pair or a big draw, but you let him proitably peel with as little as an overcard.
As played I wouldn't fold to a 3 bet from UTG+1 if he's on tilt. We also don't know that he's solid just that he plays higher. |
