villian seems to be a very good player...

I think call him preflop was my mistake.

but I was in position so I called him.

on the flop, he bet right out...

The board was small and I did not think he had any piece of it...

so I raised him and he re-raise me...

I now had to give up the pot

I am pretty sure he got big pair...

any other problem with my play or any other thoughts?

I wouldn't assume that someone who minraised me is a very good player. Preflop is ok OTB if you think they'll fold. Everything after the preflop open raise is spew.

Actually, I think you should read these:

Blind stealing by dbitel, there's a link to pokeys article on the first lines. This is where I learned from.

You don't play well enough to try to steal blinds with Q8. Fold preflop.

Given that you did, call his donk-minraise and try to hit a flop. Given that you didn't and he leads out, fold.
