Default Children of Men

Alfonso Cuaron has not just made the best film of the year, he's made, at worst, the second-best film of the past ten years. (City of God is probably better, but I'm not completely sure.)

See it.

I agree that City of God is one of the best films of the last ten years, I don't really know enough to call it THE best, though.

I really liked Children of Men too. While I wouldn't rate it as high as you, it's easily one of the best sci-fi films of the decade. Awesome cinemetography, great story, solid performances, and kick ass action sequences = totally engaging movie experience. Here's a review you will appreciate if you haven't seen it:

My favorite part of that review:

"and one might argue that the particulars of the film's political world are too vaguely sketched (though to me, this obliqueness was one of the film's strengths—it never condescends to its viewers with a pat history lesson)."

It reminds me of The Wire in that sense. "Oh, you didn't catch that? Well too [censored] bad, we're not going to have someone step out of character to explain it to you."

Really liked this. A few of my favourite things (in white to avoid spoilers)
The shot in the car when they get ambushed and Julianne Moore gets killed is amazing. Her death in itself was a pretty big surprise considering how highly she was billed.

The whole 'Human Project' thing was very well handled because you could really believe that it might just be a total myth. I'm glad that he didn't leave it hanging in the air at the end though, would have been such a lamely obvious thing to do.

Chiwetel Ejiofor is great and should get more work. His speech near the end was a bit cringey for me though

You may want to read this Mark Steyn article on the real world political ramifications of this movies main theme.
