Default I give up, what the H is an atheist?

Is there a difference between -
a) I don't believe god exists.
b) I believe god doesn't exist.

In any case, would anybody with either of those belief states be classified as an atheist?
Seems that way to me.

if the word god means a theistic definition then those statements qualify as atheism.

if you define god to be science then those statements dont apply.

Yes there's a diference unless you don't believe in beliefs. If you invented a neuroscanner that could examine the brain for beliefs then you wouldn't find in my head any belief about god's existence. You will find a belief that there's no reason to believe in god.

In others people you might find all sorts of wierd beliefs about god's existence.

The only reason anyone makes a distinction between those two assertions is because people hold lack of belief in God to an unreasonable standard when compared to lack of belief in other similarly unexaminable statements.

Asking an atheist to prove that there is no God is like asking someone to prove that we aren't in the matrix; yeah technically you can't prove either, but no one is going to call you pretentious for not believing that you are a brain in a vat.

I agree there's a difference, but I was wondering if it's one to be concerned enough about to create different species. "Cat" covers a lot of different looking entities, but we seem to be able to get by with saying "I belong to a cat" and be quite sure nobody will confuse our master with a crocodile.

I would love to see that scan.

While we're defining things, what do you call someone who would agree with:

"I don't believe."

No, that's incorrect, its nothing to do with standards of proof. I think you're confusing believing that religous people are mistaken with believing gazeebalob doesn't exist.

I'm going to need you to elaborate, because I can't make sense of this post.
