What is better for a new player.
I am about to stake one of my good friends $50 to play on either Pokerstars or Fulltilt. I have somewhat mentored him in the past month so he understands poker fairly well for the short time he has played.
He has more of a Sit and Go/Tournament background and has played many freerolls and several $1.75 turbos on Stars. Firstly, is he better off playing Sit and Go's or Ring games? Secondly, shorthanded or full. Pokerstars would mean cash games, because they have .01-.02 NL games and .02-.05 NL shorthanded and full ring Fulltilt offers $1.25 turbo sit and go's which have a 25% rake making them very tough to beat. Should he hop into the $2.25 sng's, and would it be best for turbo, regular or shorthanded for him. Any advice everybody can offer me to help my friend get started in online poker would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone and happy holidays. |

Re: What is better for a new player.
Neither. Send him to Golden Rivera so that he can clear a $50 dollar bonus with players way more terrible than at Full tilt. Then he can take that $100 bank roll and either continue to bonus whore or then choose between stars and full tilt.

Re: What is better for a new player.
I would say play his strength and develop his SnG game. It will make it easier to transition to ring games once he grasps the fundamentals of the game.
also explain to him that things don't come easy and as he gets better, he realizes how much of a struggle it is |

Re: What is better for a new player.
Pokerstars all the way. The SnGs on Full Tilt for $1.25 are turbos primairly, which combined with rake makes them pretty high variance. The $2.25 are less on the rake, but make the amount of buy-ins he would have perhaps inadequate as a starting bankroll.
Yeah, I would roll with the cash games on PokerStars. Of course you could always get him to deposit on Doyle's Room. The structures and buy-in's are pretty good for starting players with NL SnGs starting as low as .10 + .01 with 2000 starting chips and 8 minute blinds. Once you go to $1 + .10 games you can select 12 minute blinds as well. Consider it. |
