How does PartyPoker know where I am at ???

I currently live in the US. European born though.
Used to play on Party Poker but they closed my account down a few month ago when the US Congress passed their #$#%ing law. The other day I tried to open a Party Account using my old European address, but when I tried to deposit the message about gambling in the US popped up - so obviously the software knew where I was?
Anyone else tried it - and been successful with it?

Probably a proxy, however, I belive that many pokersites have most commercial proxy services banned.
