Default Control of the Senate shifting BACK to Republicans ???

According to CNN, this may happen soon, because of the ill-health of a Democrat Tim Johnson, who apparently suffered a stroke last night:

With Democrats' grasp of the Senate relying on the thinnest of margins, ultimate control of the chamber hung on Johnson's health.

"Should Johnson not be able to complete his term, which ends in 2008, South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds, a Republican, would appoint his replacement, which could shift the balance of power in the Senate.

Democrats gained a 51-49 Senate majority after last month's election. A GOP appointee would result in a 50-50 split and allow the GOP to retain Senate control through Vice President Dick Cheney's tie-breaking vote.'

Senator Johnson did not suffer a stroke, he had surgery for "congenital arteriovenous malformation, and the surgery was a success.

Long term, who knows.

Interesting though Milton, is it is Senator Johnson's call whether or not he keeps the seat (unless he dies). He could be unable to speak, vote, etc. and still keep his seat, it would not be the first time in Senate history this has happened.

He has two years left on his term and can take as much time as he needs "off".

Yeah, this is definitely a boon for Republicans if Johnson is out of the loop. Just amazing how so much power in our country can turn on one guy's health, you know?

But seriously, politics aside, I hope he feels better. No one wants to deal with that kind of health issue, Democrat or Republican.

First and foremost, I hope he is ok (regardless of his political affiliation).

From what I read:

If he passes away: Governor appoints Senators (R)
If he is incapacitated: It is his call; he can still keep his seat even if he can not serve in his normal capacity.

Joe Biden took 7 months off in 1988 with a brain aneurysm.

they should make it a law that you have to appoint someone of the same party and this wouldn't be an issue.

That would probably require a constitutional amendment, not a law. Let me know how much luck you have with that one. Maybe they can tackle party-switching at the same time.

51 Democrats does not equal 51 pro-internet gaming voters.

I hope he is ok, our feelings about his health shouldn't be influenced by the UIGEA.

UIGEA really didn't get voted on. So I did some digging:

- Cosponser of Internet gambling prohibition in the 105th Congress (1997-1998)

- Cosponser of INTERNET GAMBLING PROHIBITION ACT OF 1999

I did not go further, but he is not a friend of our cause. Nonetheless, I hope he makes a full recovery.
