The Game: Pick a number between one and ten

In Strauss' "The Game", he discusses potential pickup routine involving the question in the title.

Supposedly it's generally a certain number, but I'd like to get a totally authoritative answer here. If you know the number, don't post it just yet... I'd like to get as many answers as I can before disclosing.

Also, it's a coincidence that there were references to "The Game" in OOT recently. I had ordered it after reading a review in a computer security mailing list (yeah, I don't know either).
