Is Latin America ACTUALLY Dangerous To Travel In?
there was government fighting with communists and student protests in katmandu in nepal, our govt. says that country is not safe to travel to (it's also v. poor) but when i was there i was no worried in the least. also a lot of people say things don't walk alone at night in the streets because it's dangerous, in my experience that sort of thing is never dangerous unless you do something overtly stupid like walk down a particularly shady street or are drunk or loud and draw attention to yourself.
anyway to the question... is latin america actually dangerous to travel in? RE: countries, guatemala, el salvador, hondorus, nicaragua? my sense is that el salvador is the most dangerous and maybe is too dangerous to be safe to travel to and the others are okay but it's unclear ot me. as a sidenote iran sounds dangerous to me but i read on a website it's a great country to travel to and is very safe. |

i think its easier to walk down the wrong street then you make it out to be. |

do I have to reititerate my theory of "Kidnap Whitey for Ransom" making up the largest percentage of some of those countries' GDP?
Anyways, you probably have more first hand knowledge on the subject than I do. |

in depends on the current state of revolution in each country. I think Bolivia is more dangerous than any of those place.
you want to avoid areas controlled by rebels and machine gun toting banditos. |

everything ive read about these countries says that they are dangerous. i think you can still travel to them and not expect anything to happen, but its definitely more likely to happen there then in a buddhist asian country.

i heard something about how there was a gang problem in LA (thats in California) and the government took the gang and flew them into el salvador, nicaragua and hondorus and that's part of the reason why they are dangerous, the gangs have grown strong there.

Sometimes I will go down one street that looks fine, but come out the other end and its a bunch of squaters. This isnt a big deal in BKK because its very safe here. |
