http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6210600.stm

I have been shopping at a store that doesnt sell anything with trans fats for a little over a year now and i have lost a ton of weight(of course, this is combined with exercising a lot more.) this is a pretty bold move imo. what do New Yorkers think?

Trans fats? Seriously? I'm not a militant anti-smoker (I used to smoke), but illegalize a pack of cigarettes and they can do some real good. I guess the Trans-Fat lobby doesn't have the bargaining power...

I was in rural MS last week and wow. This is needed in rural areas, not NYC where everyone is already fru fru and obsessed with health.

This sht is needed in Batesville, MS, Anniston, AL and places like that. There is literally nothing to eat in these towns besides McDonalds.

Sorry to get off topic, OP. The experience has disturbed me.

I'm mainly a libertarian and don't think the government should get involved in this kind of thing at any level. However, I have been re-evaluating that stance after seeing the way people live in these small towns. I'm 20-30 pounds overweight and I look like Mark Whalberg next to most of these people.

My car blew up in Anniston, Alabama. I ate Shoney's, then O'Charley's, then Arby's.

You know what, Anniston is a bad example. It's not that small anymore. They even have a starbucks there now.

How about Coleman, AL. there's a good one.

RJ,

Please define a 'trans-fat,' and list what popular / delicious items one might find one in.

I eat really healthily and exercise a ton, but this seems authoritarian to me. Alcohol and cigarettes kill way more people than transfats ever will, and the justification for those products is "consumer choice." At least you can place a warning on foods that contain transfats instead of this.

Trans fats(trans-fatty acids) are a side-effect from partial hydrogenation. They are neither needed nor beneficial to health like other fats...[wiki-condensed]

This is a [censored] joke. Definitely not the role of the government...
