Has anyone read this book yet by Dew Mason and Rolf Slotboom? Rolf has a Card Player column that I liked reading so I bought the book.
Most of it appears to be written by Mason though, with some comments by Rolf mixed in. There were lots of tables and calculations and to me, I found I started glazing over when it came to estimating the final pot sizes (add three bets for this, take one away for that, etc). I probably need to read it again, but I have a masters in electrical engineering and still found it to be a bit much to think about when I am sitting at the table. thoughts? |

The first half of the book, the part dealing with counting and discounting outs, was excelent. So good, in fact, that I consider HotC to be #4 on my Limit Hold'em Requiored Reading list, right between Weighing the Odds and Real Poker II: The Play of Hands. A nessasary part of any Limit Hold'em specialist's education.
The second half, the part where you try to calculate and estimate Limit Hold'em implied odds, is utter crap. Needlessly complicated. Worthless. The first part of the book is so good, though, that you can read just that part, ignore the rest and still get more than your money's worth back at the tables. |

I like the whole book.
The thing I think people miss about the later chapters is that your supposed to do all of the thinking and calculating away from the table so that it becomes instinctual at the table. |
