Default Thoughts on police?

I've never really thought much about police tactics, but a rash of troubling incidents locally (Portland, OR) got me thinking lately. Someone sent me this article today and it got me thinking AND posting.

http://dailybruin.com/news/articles.asp?id=38958

What are your personal experiences with police? Do you find them more helpful than confrontational? Do you think police recruiting and training should be revised in an effort to weed out easily angered or naturally violent men from the ranks? Do you think the procedures for reviewing questionable incidents are acceptable? Here in Portland, these incidents are reviewed by the DA's office, creating an obvious conflict of interest.

Any other thoughts or musings about police behavior across the country are welcome.

It's a monopoly, with the power to tax; what else do you expect?

I tried to post without bringing my bias into it too much. Obviously I feel the po-po abuse their power at times, but I'm curious if this is a regional attitude or a country-wide one...or if it's even an issue at all.

Pretty regional. I've lived in LA/SF/CHI/STL. The police have a different rap in every city, and virtually no one likes the LAPD.

This could be as I've heard many bad things about LAPD cops and good things about say, NYC cops. I feel Portland is on the bad end of the scale then, which jibes with all the problems we have with our jails too. I think the leadership near the top of, well, everything in this town is pretty godawful and has been for quite some time.

I waste enough time just browsing non poker forums on 2+2. I'm not going to get into a debate that goes nowhere. Anarchocapitalists are disconnected enough from reality that they'll never change their minds. I also despise them because they do a serious disservice to sane libertarians that would actually like to change a thing or two for the better; not sit around and whine about how taxes are evil and all police officers are jack-booted thugs. They remind me of Randroids, who take something that had promise and drive it right the [censored] off the cliff , much to the detriment of others who get negatively associated with it.

Basically I live in the Real World, and they don't.

So you just stopped by here to inform us that you know the truth, but are unwilling to share it with us. That's a really nice gesture of you.
