Default awkward hand w/ a flopped full

i'm waiting for my game to get going, and i sweated this hand w/ a friend of mine.

2-5 NL

we're in the HJ w/ 9 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] ($1400)

a tight/not aggressive player opens for $20 UTG+1 ($1200)

i wouldnt call him passive- he'll value bet his hands, and make an occasional play or push, but he's not what i would call an aggressive player.

MP calls, and my friend calls.

everyone else folds.

Flop

3 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]3 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

UTG+1 bets $60, MP folds, my friend raises to $180, UTG+1 calls

Turn

J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

UTG+1 checks, my friend checks behind

River
Q [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

UTG+1 pushes all-in

my first thought was what a terrible turn check he made, then I thought maybe it was a great play, trying to make it look like he wanted a cheap showdown. i dont know what the right play there was.

on the river- facing the huge overbet- i know i would have beat him in the pot, but what do you guys think?
