Default Trip Report: St. Louis (Harrahs and Ameristar)

This is mainly to share info on the St. Louis casinos as there are often questions and I wanted to post what I saw this weekend. I played at both Harrah’s and Ameristar which are about 5 minutes of driving away from each other. Despite playing at many casinos in the Midwest this was my first trip to St. Louis where I played poker. For those that know what I normally play, I only played 1-2 NL at both casinos because I was there with friends that were playing that level so I didn’t play in the 2-5 or 5-10 nl games or the Omaha H/L game like I would have if there on my own.

Harrah’s St. Louis (Friday Night):
Tables: Around 20 (can’t remember exact amount)
Games running:
1-2 NL with $60-200 buyin
2-5 NL with $200-500 buyin
5-10 NL with an uncapped buyin (to my knowledge)
3-6 Limit HE
Comments:
This room was remodeled in April of this year to my knowledge and is awesome. The room is walled off from the main casino but has giant glass windows out to the casino floor so the room has great visibility to the main casino, there is also a large plasma with the wait list outside along the same wall so people can see what is being played inside, I think this has to get more players into the room. They have a great board management via a sign in podium at the entrance and then having a separate person that calls names to seat you. This was very efficient and kept the games full. I still give my best board management award to the ladies up at Canterbury and their whiteboard skills but this place was a close 2nd. Anyway moving on, there were 7 or 8 1-2 blind NL games, several 2-5 nl games, and one 5-10 nl game. I watched the 5-10 for a little while and it seemed to be uncapped, I am basing this on the fact that most of the players had 200 BB or greater and the 5-10 nl in Kansas City was uncapped the few times I have seen it spread. The game appeared to be full of regulars which made sense due to the $500 every 2 hour block law in Missouri. The dealers claimed the 5-10 nl is a very good loose game, just need to have the roll for it and save up the chips. Hopefully I will make a solo trip in the future and store up some chips and play in this game. For this trip I can say the 1-2 blind NL game was very soft and almost risk free, many bad players (some sober, some drunk) made for a pretty good time, the $60-200 buyin was also nice, good to see a 100bb 1-2 game.

Ameristar St. Charles (Saturday Night)
Tables: 14ish + 6 more in roped off area outside of poker room (17ish goin on Sat night)
Games running:
1-2 NL with $100-300 buyin
3-6 Limit HE
4-8 Limit HE w. half kill
5-10 Omaha H/L w. full kill
3-6 Limit HORSE
Comments:
I only played for a couple hours on Saturday and found the 1-2 NL game to be a rock fest and not nearly as good as the games at Harrah’s (this is the same as Kansas City as well). It is an okay poker room but the tables roped off outside of the room was kinda crappy and this room looks worse just because Harrah’s is so nice. I must say I was impressed when I got there and they were running down a 3-6 HORSE list and got it going with a 4-5-6 person wait list.

Final Notes:
Overall I was very impressed with Harrah’s and would love to come back and play again in some of their bigger games. I hope Harrah’s in KC is able to get a room as nice as the one in St. Louis someday, mainly just want them to glass in the room so that smoke cant float over the rail into the room and it would also dampen the slot and bar noise. If you are ever in St. Louis I would advise checking out each of these poker rooms.

Let me know if you have any questions and I can see if I can answer them.

Pretty accurate assessment. I was really impressed with the Harrah's room after the remodeling.

My brother-in-law has told me that Ameristar St. Charles has some pretty good comps so I may have to look into that.

The glass wall is under construction right now. Completion date by mid to late Dec. 2006.

Nice trip report, I played at Ameristar once and wasn't a huge fan, I'll try Harrah's next time I'm in St. Louis. Pretty awesome that they had a low limit HORSE game though, that sounds like fun.

Can you buy chips from other players? I would think regulars in an area with this type of terrible law would keep many high denomination chips available.

I thought it was $500 max loss/initial buyin in a 24 hour period. Is it only 2 hours?

This is great news, I should be playing there again 1-3 times a week starting mid-December, I am excited

Yes, you can typically find regulars that have a lot of chips in their pocket or will let you borrow their card to get $500 more as they dont check ID when you use the card to get more chips so its easy to use someone elses

Its just 2 hour blocks, like 4-6pm, 6-8pm, etc... so you could get $500 at 5:59 and another $500 at 6:01

This is hopefully obvious, but doing this is illegal so be smart about it.

Harrah's pools all their comps nationwide, but when last I checked (~March), the Ameristars in KC & STL don't pool their comps. You can only redeem Ameristar STL comps in STL, and KC comps only in KC.
