Default Strengh of poker hands - general question

this is totally newbiesh and i hope this belongs to this forum, but :
which is a better hand :
K Q 10 8 4 or K Q J 8 4 ?
do you split pots because they both have the same high card, or do you go back to the 3rd high card to call it?

k q j 8 4, the best hand is the best FIVE cards so you count all of them

If your have the same high card then you go to the second, then third etc.

K Q J 8 4 is thus a better hand.

You will split the pot only when your best FIVE cards are the same as your opponents best FIVE cards.
