I need preflop help
In holdem Mason says that you should fold 85% preflop, than how often should you fold preflop in o/8 & omaha? I feel that I am playing way too loose preflop & seeing the flop too often(around 32%). I am playing mostly .5/1.00 and I am winning a little but I think i can do a lot better. what I usually look for preflop is a2 plus a little more: a suited ace, 2 or more wheel cards, etc. Is there a list like this http://www.gocee.com/poker/HE_Val_Sort.htm
Thanks for any help Leo |

Re: I need preflop help
32% is average for an experienced player. Starting out, I'd recommend 20-25ish.

Re: I need preflop help
a good player w/ good post flop skills can have a VPIP as high as 28%
lots of players have VPIP's around 24% bad players have VPIP's >35% |

Re: I need preflop help
It really depends on how many people are at the table.

Re: I need preflop help
Get pokertracker, log a ton of hands(50K+), see which hands in which spots are losing for you, and stop playing those hands.

Keep in mind, too, that position is not as important in a loose-passive small stakes game. Just being tighter than your opponents preflop is a huge step to becoming successful.

Re: I need preflop help
Besides depending on the number of players it also depends somewhat on whether you are playing limit, pot limit, or no limit. In limit I would argue that you need to play tighter and can't afford to play speculative hands like KK23 (at least in a full ring game). The potential payoff is limited, and the reduced information about your holdings that your wider range implies doesn't really get you much.
In PL/NL I'd say that only playing A2xx makes you a little too predictable. Besides AAxx hands of course you can probably also add hands like A3[45]x (if the ace is suited), A3KK, and if there are a bunch of limpers you can even limp along with high-only hands. I play some crap like 2367 suited too but I've become more skeptical about the value; the more people you're up against, the fewer aces there are left in the deck to make your low; having a dynamic where your chance to make a low decreases as the pot size increases seems unprofitable. I should probably get pokertracker. I play loose, but have been toying with the idea of playing only AAxx, A23x, and A2xx where the ace is suited; would be interesting to compare this with my usual results... |

Re: I need preflop help
Wow, just looked at my pokertracker and I'm at 19.88 VPIP. I couldn't imagine being at 32!
