playing well when running bad
anytime someone posts a downswing its inevitable to hear people saying you must be playing differently, and to an extent its definitely true, but is it even possible to play unaffected when your running really bad? based on human emotions alone i dont think it is possible. but what do you guys do to try to let it affect you as little as possible?

Re: playing well when running bad
realize the math behind the bad beats. those bad play(er)s are why you win in the long run. once you embrace that fact it shouldn't upset you when that stuff happens. it takes practice but eventually i believe it will eventually happen to anyone that tries enough. that or you'll go broke from tilt.

Re: playing well when running bad
my problem is i am extremely results oriented, so i automatically put running bad with playing bad (i.e., making a big call that may +EV but if i'm wrong i think i'm an idiot.) same with big three barrels that get called, etc. if they work i think i'm great, if they don't i think i suck.

Re: playing well when running bad
Even if you're playing the same your opponents play better when you're losing, so your expected BB/100 goes down even if you play as good as ever.

Re: playing well when running bad
For one, don't focus on bad beats and count them up.
I haven't been doing well with controlling tilt lately but just trying to shake it off, sit out a few hands, can help. Playing less tables also helps. Not playing HU also helps. |

Re: playing well when running bad
I definitely think it's possible to play well when running terrible. I'm not perfect, but I think I'm pretty good with tilt control, overall. I don't really see myself making weird mistakes or crazy pushes when running bad, although I do generally find some mistakes along the way. Those mistakes, though, aren't really tilt related as far as I can see. I certainly make mistakes when running well, too.
Like kratzer said, you just have to try as hard as possible to take beats like a man and realize that those beats are why we make money. It only gets tricky when you've been running bad for weeks/many hands and are losing big pots other than obvious BBV material. I'm sure there are very subtle changes in your play when running bad, even when you're controlling yourself very well, but I think those are negligible if you truly are keeping calm and collected.
