Taking a shot
I normally play 10-20 limit live and online. My BR is enough for significantly higher but 10-20 is as high as I'll go. However, sometimes (especially after a bad day at the tables) I think of playing some insane limit like 100-200 (insane for me anyways) just one time. I always think "I'll sit down for like an hour and if I hit a couple of hands, even small pots, that would be so cool. No one would know me so they wouldn't know I'm intimidated and for such a short stint, I'm probably not an underdog." But I have no balls and have never done it.
Has anyone ever jumped to a limit that is way beyond your normal for just one time? If so, was it a success? Were you crapping in your pants? |

Re: Taking a shot
Don't play minbet poker.
Take your whole roll. Sit at NL5000. Stack someone and you are all set. |

Re: Taking a shot
I play 2-4 limit.
One morning, I chased my losses at 20-40. I went off, won about 3 G's in about an hour and got off. About three months later, I lost 300 at 2-4, jumped up to 15-30, and lost 1200 inside of an hour. Mixed results. I would not attempt to try it again if I were you. |

Re: Taking a shot
A couple of years ago (when I used to drink and play), sometimes I would jump up to 30/60 limit for a few minutes. At the time, I was playing 2/4 limit. The first few times I won a few pots and left quickly. I even bluffed The Grinder and I felt like Mike McD in Rounders. The last time I did it, I went on tilt and blew my entire bankroll in less than an hour. I wouldn't suggest doing it.

Re: Taking a shot
Here is the problem with taking a shot. Nobody takes one shot, wins then quits. They may quit for that session, but sooner or later, next day, next week, next month, they come back and try it again with 'house money'.
You might even run good, and take off never to look back. That is, of course, the rare exception. The problem is, most 'shot' takers PLAY UNTIL THEY LOSE at the higher stakes. Since anyone taking a shot is usually, I say usually, under bankrolled, almost all will bust out. There are valid reasons for taking a shot: 1) There is a HUGE donk in the game, just blowing off chips left and right. Since you are in theory in a very +EV spot, taking a shot is probably correct. BUT... As Sklansky points out, not if losing would require you to drop below your normal stakes. 2) You think you can beat the game, and you want to try to do so. No problem there. If you are sufficiently rolled, and you can easily play 10/20 again, why not? There may be other valid arguments for playing higher, but you get the gist. If you are going to try and 'win a few small pots', then never ever play again, I think you are just gambling. Good luck. |

Re: Taking a shot
My only advice is this: Make sure you are sober when you do it.
