My biggest pet peeve is when coaches don't understand when to go for 2 (and also clock mngment)
Last night SMU scores and goes up by 4 with 5 mins left and they go for 2! I don't think u should go for 2. So now you miss it and the other team scores and you are down by 3 instead of 2. Now a FG ties instead of wins it. Then they are up 15-9 w/ 2 mins left and score to make it 21-9 and they go for 1!!!! To go up by 13. Instead of 14 if they went for 2. This had no outcome in the final but it annoys me that the announcers dont' say that he's an idiot. |

I think going for 2 here is fine.
If they score a TD then you can still tie with a FG if you miss the 2 so thats not too bad. If you make the 2 then they only tie with 2 FGs (or leaves you tied if they whiff the EP after a TD) which I think is what the coach was considering. Essentially, the 1 point vs 0 doesn't turn any wins/ties into losses, but the 2 points can turn a loss into a tie, thus you go for 2. |

But now if the other team scores and u went for 2 and missed they will be up by 4 instead of 3. |

Going for 2 here is simply incorrect.

Of course they'd have to know football well too. If there ever was a coach that was also a well known poker player I'd bet the moneyline on his team each week. |

Even worse is when the announcers don't pick up on the little things the coaches do wrong. My friend and I call eachother whenenver there is a big coaching mistake during games. It annoys the crap out of us. |

I also want a coach to go nuts for a game and pretend its NCAA Football '07. Go for it on 4th downs and 2 points every time. All out blocks on every punt, onside kicks, everything. I think this would be the most entertaining game if both coaches did this.

Yeah that's an obvious one, but what about ones where it's a but more subtle?
Like down by 14 with 5 minutes to go or whatever, they never go for 2. There are all sorts of situations like this during games, but the proper call is rarely made, I think mostly because the public won't understand if [censored] goes awry. |

I am surprised nobody ever does this. When you're down 14 late, why not go for 2? Assuming you get the 2 TDS and hold the opposition scoreless: You make the 2, you win You miss it, but make the next one, you go to OT. You miss both, you can kick onsides or do what you have to do to get the ball back again. Seems +EV compared to going to OT. Am I wrong? |
