No, hero calls, even if Hero is probably currently beated by a flush or either a straight with 78.
Calling even if he has the flush is a very small mistake, is a mistake of only 1.4BB
So even if you are beated that you certainly are, the 1.5BB is worth to see his hand and not stay with the horrible doubt, not counting the existent possibility that he might had a hand that is currently behind like 999 or 666, or AsJc.

did i make any bad bets to get me inito this position to have me pot committed...or is it all relitively standard apart from the fold on the river?

As somebody said, the 44 bet is probably wrong, from the two callers one probably has the flush, or at least the straight. Perhaps you can check it and see how the others players bet, and then you decide based if you call based on the size of the bet, the pot, and the implied odds.

I like check-call most here. I also think you can't fold top set getting like 4.5-to-1!! FFS! WTF?!

You can't EVER fold this with those odds - hell, you even have odds to fill up.

And BB has ~$8 more than you do so it's less than your original bet to call even. If you ever fold this, i'm going to get there and spank you. And don't fold it just to accomplish that.
